Goodwill scarcely has high school volunteers however, “the more the merrier,” Durham said. Working with children is nothing new to him since he used to be a career counselor.
Scottsburg New Tech seniors have requirements before they can graduate. One of those requirements is community service. New Tech students need one-hundred hours of community service before they reach their graduation year. One place that is always accepting volunteers for community service is the Goodwill of Southern Indiana.
You can sign up for community service for Goodwill online at goodwillsi.org or you can go to Goodwill and ask for a Volunteer Application.
Goodwill will allow volunteers who are at least 13. Those under the age of 18 will need a parent’s consent before being allowed to volunteer. Parental consent forms can be found at Goodwill.
General Manager of Goodwill, Scott Durham (along with other shift managers), will give students their tasks. Their tasks include: assisting in sorting items, purging merchandise and recycling old clothing. The shift managers of Goodwill will assist in a set schedule if students are interested in creating one, however a set schedule is not required. Students (or any volunteer), can come in whenever they wish and work as long as they want unless it’s mandated by court to do otherwise.
Goodwill has approximately 3 volunteers a month. Most of Goodwill’s volunteers are mandated by court.
