Planet Fitness offers free membership for students

From May 15 to Sept. 1, Planet Fitness will be offering free memberships nationwide for high school students ages 15-18. Some locations will also have fitness classes specifically for teenagers that comes with the free membership.

All students that sign up are also automatically entered into Planet Fitness’ Scholarship Sweepstakes. At the end of the summer, names will be randomly selected for 51 winners from the United States. All winners will receive $500 towards their education and one will be selected to receive the grand prize of $5,000. Other prizes can also be won throughout the summer for students on Planet Fitness’ Twitter and Instagram. Nearby Planet Fitness locations include Madison, New Albany and Clarksville.

FFA ends the year with their annual banquet

FFA brought the 2018-2019 year to an end with their annual banquet. The banquet took place this past Sunday where there was an awards ceremony and next year’s officers were inducted. 

President Jaiden Herald (11) said, “Banquet gives the officer team a chance to award the hard work and dedication that our members employ throughout the year.”

New sport opportunity offered to students

In the wave of many new sports and clubs at SHS, ultimate frisbee has been added and is open for students to join. According to coach Brandon Jerrell, there have been about 14 students attending practices, but he expects to have about 20 on the team.

Jerrell said he decided to start the club because of the great amount of interest that he has seen in ultimate frisbee and how he wishes he would have had the opportunity to participate in a sport like this when he was in high school.

“There were a lot of kids interested in it and asked me about it. I thought if there is interest and if kids will enjoy it, let’s do it,” said Jerrell.

Bass fishing team plans to begin season

The bass fishing team is finally ready to start their season participating in tournaments after many preparations. According to coach Bill Buckner, the team of 15 members spent their off season fundraising.

“The team and amazing booster club has been doing a lot of setting up fundraisers through the year. We were able to order our jerseys and have them just in time for our first tournament. We did get a deal with Shady Ray Sunglasses so all anglers will also get a free pair of very cool polarized shades. We will also be supporting the Indiana Bass Federation tournaments to raise money for our club,” said Buckner.
